Gatekeeper by Alison Levy is an engrossing tale about Rachel Wilde, a woman who comes from a dimension adjacent to ours. Her society is built around monitoring daemons, creatures that traverse the dimensions and tempt humans to do good or evil. When a daemon no longer serves its purpose, collectors like Rachel capture it. One day, however, Rachel receives two unorthodox assignments: Locate a human who is trying to open a portal between dimensions and find the last line of gatekeepers, those who guard the power to free an ancient, dangerous daemon from its prison. After running out of leads, Rachel turns to an unstable and untrained oracle for help. While his guidance seems to lead her in the right direction, it also puts her in the path of a terrible adversary who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.
Reading Alison Levy’s Gatekeeper was a breath of fresh air for me. The elements of contemporary fantasy and sci-fi hooked me and the relatable characters and fast-paced plotline held my attention. Levy employed metaphors that were far from the clichés I’ve grown used to. With good pacing, Levy explained the rules of the thought-provoking world she created through engaging dialogue and fresh descriptions. Her characters were equally stunning. Rachel was a no-nonsense protagonist who wasn’t too tough to ask for help when she needed it. She and the supporting characters were easy to root for. When I reached the dramatic conclusion, all I wanted was more. Gatekeeper is a promising start to the Daemon Collecting Series, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves contemporary fantasy or who wants to break into the genre.
