Gambling Broke Us: Can Boston Fix Us? by Joanna Warrington unravels in the wake of the uncertainty brought about by the Brexit referendum in England. Pandora and her niece Ellie are going to embark on a trip to historic New England but Jules, the father of Ellie and brother of Pandora, is again on a binge. Addicted to gambling, he is soon going to be a father again and his bank account is, as usual, close to zero. In an unexpected twist of events, he is able to join his daughter and sister in Boston. On this trip, Ellie, who has been largely taken care of by her aunt, will learn a family secret that has been kept from her ever since her grandmother died and it will be an ugly revelation.
Joanna Warrington's Gambling Broke Us: Can Boston Fix Us? is based on a true story and is set in contemporary times. Dialogue-driven, extremely witty and fast-paced, the novel is a highly enjoyable read. And this is in spite of the depressing topic of gambling addiction, family betrayals, and an ugly secret that is as shocking as it is repulsive. Joanna Warrington is a master storyteller, weaving twists and turns in such a way that readers will hunger for more. Gambling Broke Us is definitely an eye-opener on the kind of society that we have today and how it can destroy families, friendships, and the future. Having said all this, the novel effectively offers some hope; a very realistic kind of hope!
