From Sore Soles to a Soaring Soul: Changing My Life One Step at a Time on the Camino De Santiago is a work of non-fiction written in the memoir style by author Blaine A. Rada. The work records an incredible time in the author’s life when he left work, family and normal life behind for a month and set off on a pilgrimage to walk the 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago, largely in Northern Spain. As his walking route slowly transforms him, we are treated to a daily record of the people he meets and the ways in which being a pilgrim changes his outlook on living.
Author Blaine A. Rada has crafted a fantastic and inspiring memoir that is sure to encourage others to embark upon their own pilgrimage walk, as well as bringing great nostalgia back for those who have already done it. One of the things that most impressed me was the narrative voice, which delivers a friendly and upbeat outlook, but also offers a great deal of honesty from Rada on the changing attitudes concerning his life before and after the journey. Step by step, the diary narrative develops and is well-edited to build to these open-minded and open-hearted conclusions, making it a highly emotional read as well as a voyage of self-discovery. Overall, I would certainly recommend From Sore Soles to a Soaring Soul for those readers interested in pilgrimage walks, but also those more generally who appreciate an interesting and perspective-shifting memoir.
