A cherished pet has a way of leaving its pawprint on your heart. No matter the color, or even the multi-colors, this lively little treasure seeks as much love and attention as do you, its owner. A little girl loves her calico cat. It’s definitely a friend of many different colors. The girl cuddles her cat, plays with her, sleeps with her, and the cat, in return, listens with patient love and even manages to bring the girl a gift (of sorts, usually a mouse). Both the little girl and the cat have their own way of communicating with one another, each saying, “I love you,” in a slightly different way. It doesn’t take long for a pet of any size or description to become a valuable member of the family, as this calico cat has become for the little girl.
Gail Wilcox’s picture book story, Friend of Many Colors, is a simple story about a little girl and her best friend, her calico cat. Told in rhyming verse, the plot evolves through the different shared activities, like playing, cuddling, sleeping, and sharing found treasures. When the cat brings the little girl a mouse, the reader will definitely react with humor or horror or both, because, as any cat lover/owner knows, that’s something cats like to do. It’s one way they demonstrate their love, by sharing their captured prey. The colorful illustrations, complete with the steady trail of paw prints, help carry the story along. This is a little treasure of a book that will help young readers improve their reading skills as well as share some of their own stories about their beloved pets, real or imaginary.
