In the fantastic children’s book, Fremonsters by Amy Marie, three friends take on powerful, blood-curdling monsters that spring right from Ohio’s mythology. Cody, Stevie, and Brad are ghost hunters, enthralled by anything paranormal. On an ordinary trip to a local cemetery, the friends hear a loud shriek. Stevie believes she saw something run behind some trees. Startled, the friends assume the shriek could be coming from a dying animal. They begin to head home, but a chilling discovery stops them dead in their tracks some steps ahead. As the group tries to make sense of what they saw, other strange events begin to happen. From a screaming shape-shifting monster to a menacing werewolf, the friends realize they have uncovered more than they had bargained for.

Terrifying scenes and astonishing discoveries lie at every turn of the page in Amy Marie’s Fremonsters. Vivid descriptions of the monsters are included. They add to the tension in the story. I loved that the mystery was puzzling and engaging. As the trio discovered more information, the range of suspects behind the rise of the monsters continued to shift and expand. Stevie, Cody, and Brad’s friendship is explored in depth. Their background as friends, their morbid fascination with monsters and anything paranormal, along with the challenging mystery they are trying to solve, deepens their friendship. Each of the three main characters also has a distinct personality which makes their conversations and experiences captivating. The story is told from Cody’s perspective, which inserts humorous remarks. Action scenes are also laced with humor which balances the petrifying bits in the story. Fremonsters is highly recommended for young fans of fantasy books.
