Freeze by Michele Barrow-Belisle is a Faerie Song trilogy novella. Zanthiel chose to let Lorelei go, trusting her to be safe with Adrius back in the human world, but that doesn't keep her out of his mind. On the run from his mother's wrath for ending his faux engagement, Zanthiel hides in the least likely places, but when he discovers that the two didn't make it through the veil, he will stop at nothing until he finds Lorelei. To save her life he must trust an old ally and make a deal with an old enemy. As time is running out, Zanthiel has no choice but to turn to the darkness of his past before every court hunts down Lorelei and her Elf prince.
Told from Zanthiel's perspective, Freeze adds new depth to the character exploring his past and showing unseen sides to the Shadow knight. Zanthiel's dry and serious humor is at its best as he goes on the run through the darker aspects of the land. He used to be one to kill quickly without any thought about the consequences, but now he's not the same bloodthirsty faerie he used to be. Lorelei has given him a new lease on life, making him second guess his quick decisions to kill. He's constantly thinking about his actions that wouldn't make her proud. Getting a chance to understand how he feels, and why he does what he does, makes him more of a commendable character with redeeming qualities. It adds subtext to the character that has been previously hinted at, but not yet fully explored.
Michele Barrow-Belisle dives into Zanthiel's past, showing the tragedy and brutality of his childhood at the hands of his faerie king father, and the moment he not only met Lorelei, but first fell in love with her. Zanthiel is such a riveting character, and seeing him with a friend gives readers a chance to appreciate a different side to him. He's not one to have “friends,” but Sylos is his ally and a key to his time after exile. The two have a history, but they also have fun banter between them. Freeze explores Zanthiel's side to the story, but there's a lot more to be revealed. It's clear that there's much that Barrow-Belisle has yet to share and will explore in the next book.
