Freedom is a diverse poetry collection by Vincent Magnani that voices his blunt emotions about parenthood, animal cruelty, school, the aging members of the society, and even time travel. The poem Freedom starts off the collection with its simple prose but powerful, sensitive touch on anti-Semitism. “I am a Jewish boy / I wonder if I will ever survive?” In Polar Bear, Magnani reveals his environmentalist nature as the poignant voice of endangered animals in the North Pole due to global warming. “When will people help me? / All I see water, but no land.”

The subject becomes lighter as we come across Older Brothers. “Older Brothers are mean / Older Brothers are bossy.” It’s quirky and funny but it bluntly speaks the truth about older siblings. A cry of help from a parent will definitely resonate with all mothers and fathers out there in Parent – “I dream that my kids will listen to me / I hope for freedom.”

From start to finish, it seems Magnani is rather happy to keep the same style most of the time. For example, “I am a Troubled Teen / I wonder if I will ever get my parents back together?” in Troubled Teen, whilst in Old Lady; “I am an Old Lady / I wonder if I will survive the next few nights.”

All in all, Vincent Magnani may not be the most flowery poet out there, but he compensates with a strong, emotional message on every subject. Due to his candid style, the messages pass across the pages with ease and reading this collection was rather quicker than I expected. Poetry enthusiasts will find this collection satisfactory if they are willing to pardon the absence of over-blown verses.
