Freeda was the most beautiful of all the frogs in the entire kingdom of Frogelot. She met Fred, a handsome young frog, when she was young and thinking about her future. They got married and had two little tadpoles, Frannie and Frank. Initially, their life was fun and they did everything together; fly-catching, lily pad-hopping, and playing games. The happy times ended soon and Freeda and Fred were fighting, always leaving the two tadpoles sad. One day Freeda told Frannie and Frank that she and Fred were getting divorced because they could not live together anymore. The two tadpoles cried and cried and so they began their new life living with Freeda. They visited Fred on his lily pad every other weekend and slowly they understood that though their parents did not live together anymore, they loved them. The tadpoles discussed their feelings with the other tadpoles in Frogelot school and their friends told them to keep their bad feelings inside. Would Frannie and Frank ever be happy?
Divorces can be stressful and disturbing. Freeda the Frog Gets A Divorce (Mom's Choice Award Winner) by Nadine Haruni tackles the topic of divorce and makes it easy for families to cope with difficult times. Tina Modugno captures the concept, characters, and scenes beautifully with her colorful and lively illustrations, making these palpable to young readers. It is a good book for parents to read aloud to help children understand divorce and to accept it and deal with it in a good way. Tutors and educators can also use it for storytelling sessions in classrooms and school libraries to assist children of divorced parents to handle the situation well. The author speaks about a relevant topic in an interesting way, making the topic understandable to children and helping them to deal with it in a mature way.
