Freddie and the Veggies is an illustrated picture book written and illustrated by Ngozi Edema. Freddie is a young boy who loved his diet of sweets and other delicious treats. He smiles brightly as he feasts on foods that have little or no nutritional value. One day, however, Freddie feels poorly and is bedridden. His friends come to visit him but Freddie is too sick to get out of bed. When his grandmother comes and makes special foods with delicious vegetables, Freddie learns of a whole new world of tastes with healthy food.

As a diabetic, I was pleased with the opportunity to read this wonderful book written for children. Ngozi Edema's tale of how food can control your body's health is very well written. As children grow up, they tend to prefer sweeter foods which make them hyperactive and feel like they are having fun, but sooner or later the lack of nutrition comes back to hit them hard. I absolutely loved the way Freddie and the Veggies teaches children that vegetables and healthy foods can also taste deliciously good. Not only did the foods taste different and new, but they also helped Freddie to regain his strength again. I believe that Freddie and the Veggies would be a wonderful read for children aged 5-12 years and would ideally not only be stocked in a child's private collection, but also in schools and hospitals so that children can learn about the great health benefits of vegetables instead of eating sugary candy all of the time.
