I very much enjoyed reading Fragments: Alora's Tear Volume 1 by Nathan Barham. The main character, Askon, is a half elf who serves in the king's army, even though there is prejudice against him and his kind. Askon take his responsibilities seriously, but is still young enough that he cannot always control his emotions. He is told he has been chosen to take over as leader of his town of half elves and humans, but before this can happen he learns the truth about real magic and how dangerous it can be. Now he must stop the man who destroyed his entire town and try to protect the kingdom from the vile Norill. Will the soldiers he deserted forgive him or turn him in to the authorities? Grieving the loss of his family, he sets out alone to stop the evil. And who is the mysterious girl from his town that was saved? Will she be able to help Askon?
Nathan Barham gives his characters personality and likability. Fragments: Alora's Tear, Volume 1 is well told with great detail to each character. Barham vividly describes what he wants you to see, which brings the story to life. I am not normally a fan of book series. I prefer a beginning and an end all in one story. However, I found myself wanting to discover what happens to Askon and the men he deserted. There are many unanswered questions that hopefully will be answered in the next volume. I recommend this book to those readers who enjoy fantasy fiction.
