Fox and Rabbit's Garden: A Tale of Rabbit-Less Stew written by Laurel Heger and illustrated by Monette Pangan is for young children, but could be enjoyed by readers of all ages. Although the characters are fictitious, the references to gardening and cooking are realistic. The book offers fun and vibrant pictures to enhance the imagination of readers enjoying the story. The story line allows for a wide array of learning resource material to be presented, such as gardening, cooking, and having an open mind when it comes to trying something new.
A young rabbit has prepared a garden and watches it grow and prosper with yummy vegetables and herbs. A hungry older fox watches the rabbit tend to his garden, with only one thing on his mind: having rabbit stew for dinner. Little does the fox know, when he offers to help the rabbit carry in his harvest of vegetables and herbs, that his dinner will be the complete opposite of the menu he originally had in mind.
Laurel Heger has created a charming story. The characters bring the story to life, offering two fun and exciting activities for children to try with a parent/guardian, or an adult: planting a garden and preparing a meal from what you've grown. I absolutely loved this story. It was a refreshing and lighthearted read. I was excited to find some gardening tips at the end of the story to help children understand which vegetables are easier to grow and in what weather conditions they will prosper. This book is a great resource to have on your shelves when wanting to plant vegetables or a whole garden with children.
