Four Rubbings: Stone Witch Series Volume 1 by Jennifer L. Hotes is set on Halloween. The one night of the year when the dead and the living may meet. Josie is 14 years old and, 6 years after the death of her mother, she is struggling to remember her. Having been given a grave rubbing set as a present, she talks 3 of her friends into visiting the cemetery on Halloween. Each one is to find a grave that calls to them and take a rubbing of the stone. Josie is hoping that she will, at long last, receive a sign that her mother’s spirit still lingers, but none of them could possibly have foretold what would happen next. As each of the four rubs their chosen graves, a series of events is about to be set in motion, events that will turn their world and their lives upside down. The four graves rubbed are of 4 people whose stories never really ended and the 4 friends must give them those endings. Will they live to regret the grave rubbings? Should they have left things alone?
Four Rubbings: Stone Witch Series Volume 1 by Jennifer L. Hotes was a good book. The characters did have some depth to them and Ms. Hotes has done a good job of making them realistic. At the beginning of the book, I was a little confused about the self-confidence each child possessed but, as I went through the book, more details about their backgrounds appeared, lending them the air of reality. The story itself was a little different, with elements of culture, race and family values amongst other things, and it was a rather enjoyable, if a little suspenseful read.
