Forks is a travel book by author and “World Rider” Allan Karl that tells the story of his journey around the world on his motorcycle. Dissatisfied with his inability to connect with people in his professional world and facing a divorce, Karl decides he has come to a “fork” in his life, and decides to travel around the world to learn about himself and do what inspires him. Over the course of three years, he rides his motorcycle through five continents and takes pictures documenting the scenery, the locals, and the cuisine of each country he visits. Two to four pages are dedicated to information about each country Karl visited, and those pages are full of small maps highlighting the country’s location, statistical snapshots of life in that country, photographs Karl took on the road, and a description of his experiences there. Each country’s “chapter” is closed with a traditional recipe and complemented with photographs of the food.

The result of Allan Karl’s travels is a beautiful book that has much to offer anyone who is interested in travel or international cuisine. Karl’s attention to detail is evident in many aspects of Forks, from the triple meaning of the title to the minute representation of each country’s flag that closes the pages about his travels there. Each recipe was introduced with some brief background information, and the recipes were varied enough that I found several that satisfied my vegetarian appetite.

The stories Karl tells about each country were interesting and included both historical information and anecdotes about personal connections he made along the way. The gorgeous photographs, research, and concise stories about his experiences make this book a labor of love an author should be proud of. Overall, I found Allan Karl’s strength and determination to complete his journey very inspiring, and anyone who has ever wanted to make a significant change in their life will feel the same about this phenomenal book.
