Michael is in economy class on a flight from London to New York. He awakens from a disturbing dream and finds things are not quite right on the plane. Almost everyone is in a trance-like sleep, and no attempts to wake them work. He locates five other passengers who aren’t affected: an old preacher named John who is sitting in his row, a deaf guy named Nate at the front of economy, and Maryanne and her son Charlie who are a few rows behind Michael. There are two people in first class, Mack and Elizabeth. The only crew member who isn’t sleeping is the flight attendant Cybil. There’s a strange banging noise in the cargo hold, and Charlie’s dog, Rascal, is also down there barking like crazy. What's going on? What’s in the cargo hold, and, more importantly, who’s flying the plane? Read Tom Connelly’s short story Flight Unknown for all the answers.
Short stories are great because you can get all the excitement of a story in one sitting, and there’s no time for overdone descriptions. Flight Unknown started with a bang and continued that way to the final paragraph. I could not put this book down! This story could easily be made into a movie and be a huge success. There’s nothing to fault in the plot; it’s brilliant. One final positive note: I love pop culture references and really appreciated the ones Tom Connelly used. I knew the first three but had to Google the fourth (as he suggested). This book is for lovers of action/horror with a touch of the supernatural and creatures that may not be of our time or space. An excellent story.
