“Birds of a feather…” You’ve heard that line, I’m sure. In Flamin-Go Bob by Cheryl Spears Waugh, when Flamin-Go Bob tries to fit in, to be one of the crowd, he fails at every attempt. He can’t even build a dome-shaped sand nest like the others. Why? Because he’s too creative and his mound turns into a sand castle. And the synchronized walking that flamingoes do? Flamin-Go Bob is okay until the flock changes direction. Then he’s flat on his back. The other birds are getting annoyed with Flamin-Go Bob. He just doesn’t fit in. When a storm brews, Flamin-Go Bob takes off with the flock, but ends up in a different place, falling from the sky. What will become of this wayward flamingo now?

Cheryl Spears Waugh’s picture book, Flamin-Go Bob, is a rather comical look at one misfit flamingo. Told in simple language, with multiple fonts for expressive narratives, this story will be an easy read for young readers seeking to improve their reading skills. The illustrations are superb and as comical as the misfit himself. The plot follows Flamin-Go Bob’s multiple attempts to fit in, to follow the flock even though he’d rather just do his own thing. This is a clever way for the author to teach young readers interesting facts about flamingoes, which are summarized at the end in a simple “Flamingo Fact” page. The story also contains a valuable lesson about fitting in and accepting others for their differences: we don’t all have to be the same, despite the “birds of a feather” saying.
