Five Funny Tummy Men is an educational picture book written by Jean Reed and illustrated by Clyde Seymour and Jason Fowler. Did you know that everyone has five funny tummy men working in their stomachs? If you’ve ever felt full or heard your tummy make funny noises, or worst of all, had an upset tummy, then you’ve experienced the tummy men’s expressions of dissatisfaction when they are unhappy. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to keep the funny tummy men happy and doing their jobs properly -- if you understand what they do and know what you should do.
There’s Mr. Boss who supervises the funny tummy men: Mr. Swallow, Mr. Grinder, Mr. Piler, and, finally, Mr. Deliveryman. They all work together when you eat your meals to make sure the food is digested and nutrients are delivered to every part of your body. What upsets the tummy men? Lots of things, but stuff you can usually avoid. Eating too fast makes it hard for the tummy men to keep up. Not eating enough meat and vegetables means Mr. Deliveryman doesn’t have the nutrients to deliver to important parts of your body. And being very active right after eating makes it almost impossible for the tummy men to do their jobs.
Jean Reed’s Five Funny Tummy Men offers a kid-sized look into the digestive process, including giving kids reasons why they should eat their vegetables and wait an hour after eating to go swimming. Reed takes complex biological processes and makes them comprehensible in a fun and imaginative way. Clyde Seymour and Jason Fowler’s humorous illustrations bring those funny tummy men to life with panels showing how each of the digestive processes occurs and detailing the chaos which can occur if you break the rules. Five Funny Tummy Men is highly recommended.
