Five Funny Tummy Men is an educational picture book written by Jean Reed and illustrated by Clyde Seymour and Jason Fowler. Did you know that everyone has five funny tummy men working in their stomachs? If you’ve ever felt full or heard your tummy make funny noises, or worst of all, had an upset tummy, then you’ve experienced the tummy men’s expressions of dissatisfaction when they are unhappy. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to keep the funny tummy men happy and doing their jobs properly -- if you understand what they do and know what you should do.

There’s Mr. Boss who supervises the funny tummy men: Mr. Swallow, Mr. Grinder, Mr. Piler, and, finally, Mr. Deliveryman. They all work together when you eat your meals to make sure the food is digested and nutrients are delivered to every part of your body. What upsets the tummy men? Lots of things, but stuff you can usually avoid. Eating too fast makes it hard for the tummy men to keep up. Not eating enough meat and vegetables means Mr. Deliveryman doesn’t have the nutrients to deliver to important parts of your body. And being very active right after eating makes it almost impossible for the tummy men to do their jobs.

Jean Reed’s Five Funny Tummy Men offers a kid-sized look into the digestive process, including giving kids reasons why they should eat their vegetables and wait an hour after eating to go swimming. Reed takes complex biological processes and makes them comprehensible in a fun and imaginative way. Clyde Seymour and Jason Fowler’s humorous illustrations bring those funny tummy men to life with panels showing how each of the digestive processes occurs and detailing the chaos which can occur if you break the rules. Five Funny Tummy Men is highly recommended.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the food you eat? And, for that matter, whatever you drink? It’s actually a very complicated process. But, for simplicity’s sake, the process can be explained by an introduction to the five funny tummy men. Who are they? Well, they represent each part of the digestive system. There’s Mr. Boss who keeps the others in line and makes sure they do their part. Then, there’s Mr. Swallow who starts the process with whatever goes through the mouth. After Mr. Swallow comes Mr. Grinder who makes sure the food is broken up sufficiently, then Mr. Piler who sorts the food into categories such as bones, blood, and so on. And, finally, Mr. Deliveryman who makes sure each part of the body receives the right nutrients from the food that was eaten. If the wrong food is eaten, each of the five funny tummy men complains in their own unique ways, causing cramps and many other uncomfortable conditions.

Jean Reed’s picture book story, Five Funny Tummy Men, is a clever way to teach young readers about the human digestive system and why it’s so important to eat healthy foods. The cute title, with its unique use of alliteration, will instantly attract the young reader. The author leads the young reader through the digestive process, carefully introducing each of the five funny tummy men and outlining their unique jobs. The illustrations are also clever and add a touch of humor to the story. Following the completion of outlining the digestive system, the author points out what can and does go wrong when you eat the wrong foods, or you eat too fast, or you don’t chew your food properly. This charming little book has some important lessons for young readers (and older ones, too) that will help them remember the importance of eating well and eating right.
