In Finding My Reflection, Frederick Mulae tells the story of an Italian-Australian soldier, Marshall Della Casa, who joins the war in Vietnam where he meets Ed, Matt, Bruno, and Dudley. Surviving the hardships and the horrors of the Vietnam War gives them confidence and a sense of freedom they have never experienced before. But when they return to normal life, they quickly discover that surviving the gruesome conditions of the jungle might not be enough to give them the strength and wisdom to cope with ordinary life. Follow these characters as they struggle to adapt to life after war, escaping into drugs and sex. Do they have what it takes to handle a normal job, to fall in love and raise a family, and can they heal from the excruciating scars of war? What does life hold for them when they meet again?
Finding My Reflection is a deftly plotted story against the backdrop of the Vietnam War that is intelligently captured. Frederick Mulae has the extraordinary ability to bring the characters to life, allowing readers glimpses of their thoughts, the emotions they struggle to handle, and the physical hardships they must face. The dialogues are cleverly written and while they help to move the story forward, they also provide compelling profiles of military men. Conversations about war — before and after battle — abound in this narrative and there are powerful statements that force readers to reflect on the reality of war and how senseless it can be. This novel is a wonderful tale with vividly portrayed characters and a fully drawn setting. The author’s handling of the effects of war, especially depression, is impeccable. He writes with aplomb and brings to life characters that readers will want to love.
