Nicole Campbell brings us an endearing romantic comedy in Finding Magic in Misfortune. When Samantha Marsh loses her dead-end job in graphic design, she moves to her Aunt Zinnia in Emberwood to reset and recharge. While Sam figures out her next step, she helps in her aunt’s shop with her witchy intuitive talents. Meanwhile, after an injury to his leg, Jesse Garrett comes to grips with his new life of not being a major league baseball player. Helping out in his dad’s shop just doesn’t seem like a step in the right direction. When Sam and Jesse connect again, old sparks come back to life. Will they be able to set aside their uncertainties and find their true purposes?
Author Nicole Campbell has a deft touch and has infused this book with a special kind of magic. Written in the first-person narrative from the perspective of our two protagonists, we are privy to their inner thoughts and feelings. There is a good build-up of anticipation and tension between them. The pace is steady and stays constant from start to finish. Quirky dialogue enables readers to fall in love with the characters, making them relatable and very likable. I loved the fact that there were quite a few valuable life lessons and that I could associate them with my own life. This book is suitable for a more mature audience due to the explicit language and the sexual situations. Finding Magic in Misfortune is a true gem!
