Financial Stay of Execution is a work of fiction in the crime and suspense subgenres. It is intended for the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Ryan D. Patterson Sr. In this work filled with legal thrills, difficult decisions, and painful consequences, we follow the complex life of Judge Payton, who has been tasked with sending several young men to death row in his career already. In his search for a different sentence to clear the weight on his mind, Payton discovers a new loophole, but the complications of the titular financial stay of execution could bring more aggression and controversy to the courtroom than ever before.
I thoroughly enjoyed this highly unusual work of legal and crime fiction, because it was interesting to see such a unique idea explored in a creative and emotionally conscious way. Author Ryan D. Patterson Sr. has a clear gift for developing the psyche of his characters, and it was fascinating to dive into central protagonist Payton’s mind, but also into the likes of Charles’s motivations and actions as well as those around him, either for or against his heinous actions. The viewpoints surrounding this grisly case are well balanced and nothing ever glorifies the more grotesque elements, but there’s also a good representation of different opinions on death row and whether such penalties ought to still exist nowadays. Overall, Financial Stay of Execution is a truly fascinating work that all crime fans are sure to enjoy for its fast pace, psychological details, and immersive storyline.
