Fiction Affliction: Psychic Sleuths and Talking Dogs by Max Parrott is the twelfth book in the Jaz and Luffy Cozy Mystery series. Jasmine is back with her partner-in-crime Luffy at her side and her best friend Brandon as they travel to the nearby town of Arkala for ArcadiaCon. The convention is a dream come true, especially for Brandon whose favorite author Florian Raumont is a panelist and will be covering the final book in his Lost Star series. When Florian is found dead, all signs point to murder but the bigger mystery could be the manner of his death, which was straight from a scene in his series. The town they visit automatically sets the tone of the convention as Arkala gives the impression of an epic quest that pairs organically with the ArcadiaCon. These three are no strangers to murder as they search for suspects among the fans at the convention and wonder which of them could be a killer.
The convention is a delightful setting that Max Parrott employs to create a magical background through the wonder and adulation these fans have for authors. Specific word choices highlight the usual lighthearted tone that the Jaz and Luffy series is known for but add a touch of magic such as Jasmine having childlike wonder in her eyes and dreaming of a wonderful fantasy when she goes to bed. The mystery is personal for Brandon, whose favorite author is the one murdered, which adds to Jasmine's drive to find the truth. Brandon and Jasmine continue to have a genuine connection that grows more with each book into a strong partnership, though Luffy as always is her primary (and charming) partner-in-crime. Parrott captures the canine personality perfectly, as Luffy reads the way you'd imagine a real dog would be thinking. The Jaz and Luffy Cozy Mysteries continue to enchant and delight in Fiction Affliction with the lighthearted and quirky nature of the tone, more humorous sleuthing, fictional authors, and a fun convention setting.
