From Luke. G Dahl, author of the Daddy’s Curse series…which I really enjoyed reading…comes yet another story, Faith Under Water, that captures the heartaches of human suffering in a short novel. Like the previous series, Faith Under Water is a biography that reads more like a memoir, and as such, the emotional involvement the reader feels with the narrator is high. This time, Dahl fans won’t be reading about human trafficking, but what it is like for a Bangladeshi family to be forced from the home they love, not by nefarious people, but by the ravages of flooding.
The title, Faith Under Water, is utterly appropriate: it encapsulates the hope and faith that children have that their parents will make the right decisions when it comes to family safety, both as they flee the flood waters, and later when they are captured by a brutal group of bandits. Initially, and to their surprise, life in the bandits’ compound seems like a happy, safe haven. But when the young narrator, Azam Samad, begins to learn what truly goes on in the compound, he urges his family to flee. Do they believe his claims? Will they get away safely or die in the attempt?
Readers will find themselves caring deeply enough for Azam and his young sister, and Azam’s friend, Halimat, so that the tension felt by the characters is felt by the reader. You will learn about life and struggle in this poor country. You’ll be glad you didn’t grow up in such circumstances and in such a hostile environment.
