“Once upon a time…” Don’t we all love a good fairy tale with such an epic opening line? Elizabeth’s fairy wings still haven’t grown, but the Oracle calls her to find the four treasures to save her world. Unfortunately, it’s dying; everything is blackening, and the darkness is growing. For this quest, only one may accompany her, and Jessica steps forward. They must journey to the four elemental realms to find the treasures. It’s not an easy journey, as there are obstacles at every turn, but it’s quite an adventure, one that will teach her about true beauty and how one fairy queen allowed her vanity to rule instead of her heart. Maxine Stockton’s story, Faerie Tale, is precisely what its title says it is; a fairy tale. Cleverly woven in a web of interlocking tales, this story is told as a classic fairy tale, from its opening lines to the plot that twists and turns and integrates magic with the intense lesson of what is truly beautiful in this complex world. The characters, a beautiful, but vain fairy queen and a young fairy who has yet to grow her wings, along with many other fairies of varying qualities, are well-developed. Descriptive narrative and dialogue are used effectively to move the story along as the plot follows young Elizabeth on her quest to save the forests before it’s too late. For Elizabeth, there is a lot to learn on her quest, not just about true beauty and vanity, but what it means to be a good fairy. But first, she must find and remember to be herself.
