Extinction: Fade To Brown by Clarke Given is a science fiction novel that revolves around a future in which the caucasian race is on the brink of becoming a relic of the past, anticipating their demise within just over four decades. Political and social changes have resulted in a restructuring of power, pushing what is left of white American males and females into the minority as they fight to cling to what is left of their race. When a strange flu begins to sweep through the general public, where deaths among people of color mount with clear links but little by way of leads, a professor operates in the shadows to preserve his people in the hopes of changing the tide back into his and the diminishing population of whites ultimate favor.
Extinction puts forward an interesting premise and one that feels like a fresh twist to science fiction survival stories. Clarke Given provides the basis of what could really branch out into a series that follows the lives of people—and on the verge of extinction—in this particular world. The tone is similar to reading a screenplay and, if you approach it in that way, it is extremely enjoyable. The story is so unique that, for me at least, my interest remained steady through to the end. I liked that the intrigue went all the way up to the chain of command with an inside peek into the highest levels of government, including the office of the President of the United States. Extinction is a fun diversion from the normal sci-fi offerings and is worth a read.
