Exiled is a work of fiction in the historical thriller genre and is part of The Lost Pharaoh Chronicles Complement Collection. It is aimed at mature readers due to the presence of some potentially triggering and sensitive subject matter and was penned by author Lauren Lee Merewether. Set in a period of Egyptian history previously a mystery to historians, the book follows series antagonist Pawah as he attempts to manoeuvre himself into a position of power through intrigue and conspiracy to murder the rightful Pharaoh and his heirs. As a prophet, Pawah’s resources are plentiful, but can he bring them to bear and realize his plan to become ruler of Egypt?
Author Lauren Lee Merewether delivers a historical fiction novel set in the New Kingdom of Egypt, but with the kind of cinematic and emotional accessibility that will suit the modern reader well. I loved the world-building in this book which made me feel like I was in Egypt and made me eager to visit it for real. I felt that the author really understood the world in which the novel is set, and I enjoyed learning about the culture and history of Egypt. The central figure Pawah is compelling and flawed, making an engrossing character for us to follow. The story felt fast-paced and exciting, and I found it hard to put the book down before seeing how each scheme would conclude. Merewether did a great job of putting you in the story with the characters, racing against the clock to solve the mystery yourself. Overall, I would certainly recommend Exiled to fans of historical fiction, and those keen to learn more about the culture of Egypt.
