Emma Thorne is on top of her game when the unthinkable happens: her severely depressed husband disappears, and her father dies. The mayor quickly promotes her to Chief of Police, only to open her to scrutiny from her own department for being selected to fill the job her father had served in for decades without consideration of others on the force. Soon after, she's faced not only with the heartache of a missing husband, but resentment from her own colleagues. Then a murderer strikes their small town, picking off people who are directly connected with Emma. Ever So Silent by Christopher Little is a perfectly crafted tale of intrigue and mystery that will keep you guessing until the last page.
I am extremely impressed with Ever So Silent. It's a tightly-woven mystery with a perfect cast of characters and an intriguing plotline. In particular, I like how things tie together even though there are several different plotlines taking place. It's definitely not your stereotypical mystery novel, and breaks the mold by showing the full meaning of the term "life happens!" Indeed, it's possible for everything to fall apart around you for seemingly little reason, only to find that outside forces were creating the turmoil. Christopher Little does a magnificent job of handling the various characters, relationships, and plot elements masterfully, and with a finesse that is necessary for a good mystery novel. This is not just an interesting novel, but a must-read for anybody who loves a good murder-mystery or police procedural novel.
