Selene Valenne has hidden her dark gift as a Marked One her whole life, working hard as a Rider in the small town of Maresbane to support her mother. Marked Ones are feared in the Realm of Evaria for their ability to change into a beast, and for possessing a latent power. Life with her mother, Maye, is quiet, although a Rider’s job can be dangerous and unfair, running hazardous errands with only enough pay to get by. One errand turns out to be ill-fated, as her secret is discovered by a Praecyr named Ranur. The death sentence awaits her, but Selene uses her forbidden power to escape.
A Raven’s Flight by Angele Mort is the first volume of the epic fantasy series Evaria. Selene’s fateful meeting with Xaiden and Felan leads her to King Graelen’s castle, the ruler of Evaria. She’s given a chance at a new life as an Aranth, a coveted elite guard. Yet Selene finds herself unwillingly tangled in a web of dangerous secrets in the castle.
Mort deftly makes Selene relatable and as human as possible, even with her being a Marked One with a latent ability. Other lead characters, such as the mage Damaeus and Selene’s brother Islyr, also move the story forward substantially as the surreptitious matters that revolve around the royal family connect the characters together.
Mort’s grasp of the genre is solid and clearly shown through her flawless prose. This provides a great overall flow of the story. With a character-driven plot, this series brings a fresh tale to a well-established genre. This is a superbly written piece of storytelling, and should appeal to any readers and not just to fans of epic fantasy.
