Eubeltic Descent by Nadine C. Keels weaves a beautiful story of friendship, hope, and overcoming past regrets in this powerful first book in her Eubeltic Realm series. Abigaia was born in a small village to loving parents. When things take a tragic turn, she finds she has lost the ability to use her voice; she’s mute. Abigaia carries a notebook to write down her thoughts and words, but she still finds it challenging to get people to listen without her speaking. With the help of books, she learns to use sign language to communicate. Yet her attempts are hampered when she finds none of her neighbors understands sign language. Then she finds a stranger who also knows how to use hand signs. This chance meeting opens up new possibilities for Abigaia, and her journey takes another exciting turn. The book explores several disability themes, raising the question of how these individuals fit into society and how the community can best include them.

Eubeltic Descent by Nadine C. Keels was a wonderful surprise. I’ve enjoyed a few other stories by this author, finding that each new book contains a lovely theme of hope and love. Her characters are delightfully flawed and unforgettably unique. Rich in culture and told from a Christian worldview, her books are a must-read. Abigaia and Dauntless (Daun) make a beautiful team, and I loved getting to know them. The theme of disabilities and their toll on less fortunate families are close to Abigaia’s heart and one she seeks to better understand and face in her story. Abigaia knows being different is hard. She also understands that the person often still has something to contribute. It simply means that their gift might look different from others. This message throughout is a lovely reminder and shares a powerful truth that while we might be different, we all have a unique role in God’s design.
