Hermione Lee’s Eric’s Tale: Otherworld Trilogy Companion Novel is a story about two worlds: the Otherworld, full of positivity and harmony, and the Underworld, full of suffering and brutality. Although born as the prince of the Underworld, Eric Williams wanted nothing more than to escape from the miserable place where he grew up. Having experienced abuse all his life from his mother, Eric left for the idyllic realm he wished to live in, the Otherworld. He believed he would finally live a peaceful and happy life since the Otherworld was a realm of peace. However, there is no such thing as perfection. A series of unfortunate events start to happen around his fellow Elder friends. Eric realized that lurking beneath the surface were also greedy and wicked Elders that threatened the harmony in the Otherworld. During this time, the Underworld suddenly launched an invasion. It was now up to Eric and his friends to find a way to protect their home.
Eric’s Tale by Hermione Lee is an engrossing and remarkable story that hooked my attention from the get-go. As I read, I began to adore Eric and his crew, and at the same time, I developed a profound contempt for the Elders who continued to cause them problems. It was amazing how the characters aided in Eric's character development, and both the good and bad situations helped him grow up and see through the illusion of a flawless world. I was impressed with the progress he made the deeper I got into the story. From a naive youngster who simply desired to live in a perfect world, he understood that not everyone bad had a perfectly acceptable cause for doing so. Eric's compassion in the face of difficulty was admirable, and I wished desperately that he would get the peace he craved. This book had amazing characters, an engaging and clever plotline, and beautifully created magical realms. Hermione Lee’s skillfully written narrative brought to life the mystical and the magical, and I can’t wait to read more of her sensational work. Excellent job!
