Equipment is a dramatic and intense work of espionage fiction written by author Hesse Caplinger. Written for adults due to its themes and graphic content, this engaging thriller focuses on a simple error that draws a serious hotbed of activity into an otherwise benign Midwestern city. When Charles Foster is taken out of the CIA field and given a desk job, his worst fears about his own personal failings are confirmed. But a small project for Charles soon turns into an international disaster as three new players enter the game, and most of them quickly regret it. One such man is the enigmatic Marek Hussar, a foreign national with a shiny car and an air of danger about him.
Author Hesse Caplinger has created a new classic with the arrangement of such engaging figures and situations in Equipment. I really enjoyed the fast pace of the tale as it was well balanced with a level of covert detail and character development, revealing secrets about the mission itself as well as the players of the game at every turn. I never felt overloaded, and there were plenty of witty action scenes and classic spy moments of sex and violence to keep genre fans happy. Hoyt Gamlin from the SAS might have been my favorite character: a gritty and realistic Brit thrown into the mix with such stylish international and slick American figures. Overall, Equipment ticks a lot of boxes that espionage fans will want to see ticked, and does it all with smooth prose and great style.
