Enter to Win brings a fresh twist to the mystery reader by becoming a reality novel. Kirsten Jany has taken a failing soap opera that has become a reality television show and created a brilliant fictional mystery story.
Enter to Win opens with Rob, the director of a TV soap drama, Crystal Falls, inventing a contest to save his failing show. The contest asks the viewers to send in the story of why their life is a soap opera drama. Four people are chosen as the finalists, but only one will be selected to see their story on Crystal Falls and win the cash prize. The four contestants are brought to Los Angeles and are living together in a mansion that will become part of the show. Shortly after the four arrive, Director Rob is found murdered. Enter to Win now shifts from a soap opera contest to a whodunit mystery. Each of the following chapters is one of the four contestants or the underpaid assistant director, Jeremy’s thoughts and conversations. Each one is sure they know which of the contestants is really the killer and why Rob was really murdered.
Enter to Win is a refreshing change from the typical murder mystery book. Kirsten Jany has written a book worthy of high praise. She has taken our fascination with all of the reality television we now watch and transferred it to the book world. It was hard to put Enter to Win down and I neglected my everyday chores to finish the book. My idea of “who did it” changed from page to page and, because I was never correct, it was a perfect surprise ending. Kudos to Kirsten for a book that is sure to be a best seller.
