I remember my mother saying that “children are only with us on loan.” Yes, they are a gift, but the gift is temporary because ultimately, children grow up and move on with their lives. Even though children are with us short-term, they always have us on speed dial for advice or just a caring and compassionate listening ear. As parents, we do our best to pave the way for them to lead healthy, positive lives. It’s not easy. There are plenty of guidebooks available to help parents stumble through the quagmires of parenting. It is a journey, one marred by many pitfalls and traumatic times when we just want to give up. What we need to do is sit down and observe, pay attention, and learn from our mistakes. Children think and behave differently than we do and they’re on a learning curve as well. Sometimes the learning curves of the parent and the child are so divergent that they clash as they intersect. Remember, you are not alone. Others have taken this journey and some have a wealth of wisdom to share. Enjoy the Gift of Childhood: Exchange Guesswork for the Science of Parenting Young Kids by Kerrin Margiano will help you on your parenting adventure.
Enjoy the Gift of Childhood is a great resource to help parents on this often challenging journey. The author is a self-taught parent, just like the rest of us, but her non-scientific approach to understanding and appreciating these valuable young people put in our care is enlightening and will help you deal with your challenges along the way. Remember, each child is different and each new challenge is different in so many ways. The best and most profound advice is to listen and observe, to recognize differing attitudes and perspectives (both of you as the parent and your child), and interpret each path laid before you on your uniquely challenging, but ultimately enjoyable journey. Kerrin Margiano provides sound advice and suggestions. This is a well-researched and presented guidebook to enjoying the challenge of parenting.
