Emotional Changes: Young Adults and Divorce by Stephanie E. Stevens-Hicks is a book that speaks about the trauma a family goes through when a divorce happens. Divorces can happen at any time in life; some couples divorce when the kids are young and some of them once the kids are married and settled. Many times couples stay together because they cannot afford a divorce, but however modern one's thinking is, it cannot wipe away the turmoil caused to all parties involved. The book describes the five stages that one experiences during a divorce: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance of reality and truth.
It is important to maintain your respect and dignity and also get support from family and friends while going through a divorce. The book is written from the viewpoint of a young adult and has kept in mind the perspective of the children and what they go through when their parents divorce. The trauma that children face when a divorce happens is also discussed. Young or older, children do have a hard time while their parents divorce and it is tough for them to take sides. I found the book a useful tool that gives guidance to couples handling divorce when they have nowhere else to turn. The situations mentioned while a divorce happens are genuine and relatable. The book also describes how children will make the transition from their old way of life to the new one, that is being with single parents.
