PT Evans, author, and Jake Tashjian, illustrator, have presented the fourth book in their series - Emoji Adventures Volume 4: Reality TV. The story begins with twins Annie and Kevin arguing with Mom about who controls the television that day. Mom has invited her girlfriends over to watch Real Housewives of Emojiville, winning the argument. Soon, Dad, Mom and her friends decide to develop a pilot show – their version of Real Housewives of Emojiville. While that pilot was rejected, the producers loved Annie and Kevin’s cameos and decided to make a reality show about them. Real Siblings of Emojiville is created, and Kevin even has a budget for doing his pranks. Cameras follow Annie and Kevin to school, hanging out with their friends, and in their home. The glamour soon disappears as Ari Emoticon, the producer, shifts the focus from their real lives to increasing the ratings.
The audience for this book is the elementary school and preteen age group. Such subjects as reality TV, emojis, and texting are familiar for today’s youth. The story line is entertaining, while imparting some important life lessons. Perhaps there is a cost in having the world examine your friendships and your life. Any reader would have to think about what is really behind today’s reality shows. PT Evans and Jake Tashjian have created a relatable tale in Emoji Adventures Volume 4: Reality TV. The illustrations are fresh and topical as well, complete with many emojis – at least one on every page. The book is a fast read; this too would be appealing to today’s youth.
