Emma’s Funny Birds is a very imaginative story of different kinds of birds in Emma’s neighborhood. Not only does author Christy Jordan Wrenn make up new types of birds, she has them dressed differently than other birds. The book provokes wonder: is the crane couple across the road real or are they lawn decorations? The author and the illustrator are very creative. The marker renderings accurately illustrate the story and demonstrate the imagination of the author. I don’t think I would want a polka-dotted bird in my swimming pool!
Emma’s Funny Birds has more types of birds than most bird books. There’s the walker bird who walks across the sand and whoever heard of a hurry bird? How many birds have you seen wearing a cute sun hat? Author Christy Jordan Wrenn must have had a fun time writing the story and drawing the pictures. Such a silly book! She is very imaginative and will get children imagining different types of birds or other animals. I think parents and children will enjoy reading about Emma’s Funny Birds and dreaming of their own silly birds or any animal. How would you dress up a bird? Emma even saw a surfer bird riding a boogie board on the next big wave. What would your imaginary bird be doing? This book is destined to start a lot of conversations, silliness, and interactivity. I can imagine a new game starting to pass the time in a car or waiting in a restaurant. I highly recommend Emma’s Funny Birds to early readers or parents reading to younger children.
