Emma Speaks: A Journey into the Soul of an Animal Friend by Diana St. James is an insightful book about an abused and skeptical woman who finds escape in horses and who uses an animal communicator to help her dressage horse in training when the horse starts having problems that Diana can’t solve on her own. Diana is a middle-aged woman who suffered abuse as a child and becomes the owner of a horse that turns out to be just as traumatized. Emma is a sarcastic thoroughbred that is sensitive and unlike any other horse that Diana and her friends have ever seen or heard of. Diana and Emma bond and grow as a team. Diana loses her skepticism about animal communication as she gets to know, feel, and see what Emma sees and has gone through to become the horse that she is.
Diana St. James writes with a strong voice that shows passion and love for her horse and fellow humans. Diana St. James described the scenes and conversations in a manner that allowed me to see and hear what was going on in the book. She gave Emma and the other animal characters their own personality and voice and made them all unique. This showed how all animals have their own voice, manners, personalities, and ways of communicating. Diana St. James shows that skeptics can be turned into believers when they meet unusual circumstances that force them to change their views and thoughts. I’m looking forward to the next book. I would like to see how Diana and Emma’s relationship continues to develop and if Emma finally finds the peace she deserves.
