In the four sections of Embracing Grief, Julie Maurer guides you through her encounters with grief, helps you acknowledge your emotions, provides coping strategies, supplies poetry that may put words to your feelings, and delivers sixty-six journal prompts. Maurer briefly shares her experiences with her husband, mother, and beloved dog after they passed away and her contrasting reactions to their deaths. Thirteen poems by the author and Marcia Kraft elicit deep emotions that align with several very different types of grief. The journal prompts will assist you as you chronicle your grief journey and address issues you may not know were present. Readers may wish to take their time with this book and keep it in case they need to reflect on their answers to the prompts and add to them.

You will feel deeply connected to Julie Maurer after you read about her experiences with death and how her relationships with the deceased affected the way she healed from each death. Grief can take many forms, from the loss of a loved one to the absence of a treasured relationship, possession, or experience. The author allows readers to prioritize their healing without placing a time constraint on it, and the book helps readers no matter where they are in the stages of grief. Maurer encourages readers to do the prompts that interest them, even if they only respond to the entries with one word or a picture. I wrote about my mother's passing, and I found it cathartic. The prompts felt like conversation starters with a trusted friend who truly cared to hear my thoughts. Like a lotus flower, Embracing Grief will allow you to blossom as you navigate your feelings at your own pace and develop essential coping skills and a healthier mindset.
