Edgar: The Mouse Who Left His Field and Discovered the Ocean by Ruth van Vierzen is the story of Edgar the field mouse who is having a difficult time building a home in autumn. The first time he tries, a strong windstorm blows away his house and the second time he tries, Felix and Mustard, the two barn cats, make it their play toy. Edgar is fed up and he decides to look for a new place. Finding a perfect new place is not easy for Edgar. He meets Jodie the squirrel who tells him about the Wilsons and Edgar decides to make his new home in their camper van. One fine morning he hears Mr. Wilson saying that they are going on an adventure. Where does it take Edgar?
The story line is interesting and children will find Edgar's trip adventurous and enthralling. The story is also about going back home, the place which gives everyone a sense of belonging. That is what Edgar decides. Instead of being in the forest, he realizes he is happy being with the Wilsons. The illustrations are appealing and adorable, and they make young readers feel as if they are there with Edgar on his adventures. Edgar: The Mouse Who Left His Field and Discovered the Ocean is a good bedtime storybook and can be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. Edgar is adorable and will remain in the hearts of young readers for a long time. I wonder where Edgar’s next adventure is going to be?
