Colleen Driscoll’s children’s book, Eddie and the Dinosaur Egg, is a perfectly driven story line with realistic dialogue and believable characters. The images created by illustrator Naomi Brown depict a bit of a bygone age, or perhaps if it is not bygone it is a place that is far out in the country where cellphones do not exist. There are characteristics of the illustrations that remind me a bit of the manga style with the large eyes and face shapes, which makes the characters appear somehow even more endearing. Overall, the story has a lovely progression from beginning to end throughout its thirty-two pages.
Eddie and the Dinosaur Egg took me back into my own childhood. The adventures you’d have outside in your own backyard before the invention of cellphones and modern computers. In this case, Eddie has stumbled upon what he believes to be a dinosaur egg in his yard. He then shares the news of this with his best friends, Max and Josie. The subject material of dinosaurs has always fascinated me, and this book didn’t disappoint in any way. The vivid, manga style illustrations by illustrator Naomi Brown completely won me over. Even though I am not a total fan of the manga style, these had a child-like quality to them that I connected with in a number of ways.
It is easy to put yourself back into your own childhood while reading this book, when you had your own scrapes and fun along the way. Eddie and the Dinosaur Egg is definitely a book that you will want to read to your children, and one that they will surely treasure as much as I did when I came upon it. For those who are ahead in years, it will take them back in time, and for those just starting out, it will show them the excitement that may be awaiting them in their own backyard.
