The poetry depicted in Echos Of Cries Unheard by first time writer and author, Pattie Marsiglio, absolutely, genuinely, COMPLETELY BLEW ME AWAY. I have no words to express the depth of emotions that she was able to capture in her beautiful, haunting, insightful poetry. I have read many poems and many books, but this completely took me by surprise. This book is a series of poems inspired by a tragic event in American history that many Americans still remember as it screamed across television screens around the nation on December 14, 2012. This unspeakable event happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School and took the lives of twenty first graders and six staff members by a mentally ill man suffering from Asperger Syndrome.
Pattie Marsiglio as a writer (first time or not) and poet left me reeling with so many emotions that are very hard to express in this short review. She touched on so many subjects plaguing our nation, and our world today. The cycle of violence, racism, addictions like alcoholism, gambling, mental illnesses - I could go on and on about so many subjects she was able to touch upon and give such a beautiful, loving, unbiased judgement of each person's viewpoint. She did the ultimate as a writer/poet. She was able to transcend her gift of writing to give readers a different perspective in each of the players in a human event, a role, and bring fairness to the perception. I can't explain it any other way. It impressed me that she has not gone to college, but it just shows that the talent of writing and expressing oneself is inherent in each writer.
I could go on and on. This is one of the best books of poems I have ever read about different viewpoints on life's events plaguing our world today. Marsiglio has the gift to put into words what needs to be said to heal this nation and this world. The only suggestion I'd make is to have a list of names and details of what their role in Sandy Hook was. I got so emotional reading the poems. If there was a list I could go back to refer to, it would have helped me comprehend each poem much better. Pattie Marsiglio is a natural writer with a gift so profound that I can't even express how beautiful and heartfelt I found her work to be. Kudos!! More than a 5 star review!
