Dream Detective: Malaya Cruz Series Book 1 by Lucy Weaver is a completely entertaining and satisfying story supernatural fans will love. We begin just after Dex's funeral, when the protagonist, Malaya, finds herself alongside her best friend Caris in Las Vegas as a distraction of sorts. The first-person POV draws you into the story right away, and the author wastes no time getting into the plot, which makes for a well-paced book. Malaya meets Jude, the super attractive private investigator, and chemistry evolves. The strange dreams she has are just the beginning of the mystery that begins to define her life, and these same dreams form a supernatural connection with him that they don't quite understand. Is she psychic? What does it all mean?
Weaver uses natural dialogue and a fresh twist to the paranormal romance genre, delivering a solid story with an intriguing premise and interesting characters. I like the mystery surrounding Dex's heroin overdose, and the author's easy style. Readers become immersed in Malaya's drama as she navigates life's challenges--her brother's death, a new vocation as a private investigator, and a possible new romance. This is a lot on her plate, but that's the stuff good paranormal romance novels are made of. Once you get into the lives of these characters and follow the mystery and suspense, you're hooked and want to know what it all means. I like the dialogue--playful and coy in just the right places, sincere in others--as well as Malaya's vulnerability and honesty. She has a lot to deal with but is strong. She and Jude have an interesting relationship--there's an obvious mutual attraction--and readers will enjoy their interplay. You aren't exactly sure of how far their relationship will go, but you are eager to find out. There are enough surprises in this unpredictable plot to keep you invested, and you find yourself wanting more at the close of the book. For a paranormal romance with drama, suspense, and likable characters, treat yourself to Dream Detective by Lucy Weaver.
