Adara Spence's Drawing Red starts with Lucy, an introverted artist, facing a difficult situation. She would soon be homeless as her mother and father were urging her to get a job so she could live independently. Being confined to her bedroom for most of the time, this experience was unbearable and left her feeling far from well. However, one day, Lucy's hard work and determination paid off as she landed a job, just in time to ease her growing anxiety. It was not just any job; she was going to work as an illustrator for the artistic interpretation division of Cross-Key & Co, a global household brand. While learning about the work, she discovered a supernatural world she thought only existed in books. After barely absorbing information about vampires, werewolves, and tree spirits, she finds herself faced with a horrible situation that might cost her the job. Her charge, Oda, the tree spirit who occupies a notebook, has been stolen. Without Oda, what use would an interpreter be? Was she about to lose her home, her job, and her new friend, a wolfishly attractive flatmate?
Drawing Red is captivating and skillfully written. The introduction effectively depicts the challenges faced by the eldest child in a family. I could sense Lucy's anxiety and distress as she faced the pressure of job hunting. When Lucy started working at Cross-Key & Co, the sadness I felt in the beginning was quickly replaced by excitement, and that's where the adventure began. The assignment of sketch interpretation she was given intrigued me due to its unique and artistic idea. Apart from her job, I also noticed her coworkers. They each had outstanding personalities and one had an unexpected history with Lucy. I loved the interactions between Lucy and Will because Will's happy-go-lucky personality is so catchy that I found myself smiling for no reason while I was reading. Lucy's journey taught me that it is necessary to step out of our comfort zone to find the right place for ourselves. I'm happy with how things turned out for Lucy. Outstanding work by Adara Spence!
