Do Over by Audrey Beth Stein is a story for everyone who has ever asked “where do stories come from?” Audrey sees a string coming down from the sky. She pulls it, and the adventure begins. As in dreams, the adventure is unexpected, illogical, and silly. The story is told in the first person by someone who doesn’t mind becoming a lollypop or a bear or having a sandcastle appear on top of her. There’s always something new happening, something new to do, and a new problem to solve. The solutions don’t have to make any more sense than the problems. The point is to have fun. Beyond the choose-your-own-adventure books where you pick from a list of possibilities, this book goes where the reader wants to take it.

The author of Do Over thanks lots of people for helping her with this book. These people gave her feedback, illustrations, and encouragement – all things every writer and storyteller needs and appreciates. At the end of the book, Audrey Beth Stein invites the reader or listener to join the adventure because it’s not over yet. This is not a bedtime story. Instead, it will help the reader wake up and think playful thoughts. There are blank pages at the end for the reader to fill in the next steps in the tale. This book could be used in a classroom or other activity group that has enough blank sheets of paper to give everybody a stack. There’s no limit to how long the story can become. Just because the reader fills in the pages doesn’t mean that the book is finished. Get some more paper and have another chance at doing it over.
