Do Not Wish For A Pet Ostrich: Silly Books For Kids by Sarina Siebenalar features an unnamed little girl whose parents had once told her she could pick out a pet. They only wanted her to be sure that she would not regret her choice. Sally had once got a cute pup who chewed up all her shoes. Tom’s cat snoozed all day and that made everyone go crazy. Her teacher’s parrot chattered too much. Suddenly the little girl came up with the thought of getting an ostrich. She looked at the shooting star all night and wished for an ostrich and went to sleep. The next day when she woke up, she saw her wish had indeed come true. The ostrich had a large appetite and the little girl had to find more food for him to digest. While eating apples, they got stuck in his throat and she had to call her vet. Dr. Wally Kazoo asked her to give him a big one-pound butter block down his throat so that the apples would go down smoothly. Taking care of the ostrich became too much for the little girl after a while. Wherever she took him, she found it too much to handle him, and, finally, she wished on the shining star again to take her ostrich back to the zoo.

The rhyming verses give it a good rhythm, pace, and movement, making it an enjoyable read. Gabby Correia gives more momentum to the story with her colorful illustrations and takes readers on a joyful ride along with the little girl and her ostrich. It is a good story for children who like to keep pets and take care of them. The questions at the end of the book are a good way for children to reflect on what they have read and the story gives children interesting information on ostriches. Which pet will the little girl wish for next after the ostrich leaving the ostrich in the zoo? You will have to read the book to find that out.
