Kate MacInnis is the author of Distant Heart Sounds Book One and Distant Memories, Book Two in the series about Nurse Morgan Cutler. These are ghost stories with a sense of humor. She has loved paranormal books, movies, TV shows, and mysteries since she was a little girl growing up in Metro Detroit.
She is frequently asked why she chose the paranormal genre in which to write. “Everyone has a ghost story, even if they won’t admit it right away. It’s a common thread for all of us. Besides, how do you know they don’t exist? You can’t see germs either and you know they’re real.”
Kate has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Oakland University and a master's in American Culture from the University of Michigan-Flint. Before becoming a novelist, she was a newspaper features journalist, textbook editor, and chief fundraising writer for a Michigan hospital system.

Though this was a little different from my usual go-to genre, I enjoyed the book! Kate MacInnis puts her spin on supernatural, dimensional travel, and what happens in the afterlife. This was refreshing and created a great opportunity for world-building. Morgan reminded me of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character on the TV show Ghost Whisperer, although instead of being an antique store owner, Morgan is a nurse. We also have Morgan’s love interest, Dr. Caleb Lightfoot, who has an air of mystery around him. I appreciated that Kate didn’t force the relationship between these two. Instead, it progressed as naturally as it could. I wasn’t a big fan of the Wilkersons. Although Elisabeth forgave Jonathan for his indiscretions, I never could, and neither would Morgan. Kate played on the generational differences between Morgan and Elisabeth, which was another tidbit that I loved. It was nice to see how Elisabeth reacted to what women can do in Morgan’s reality as compared to her own. Distant Heart Sounds is a great read, and a definite recommend!
