In Discovering Pompeii, author Natasha Sheldon takes you on a tour of the must-see sights in the Italian region of Campania. She takes you to explore the houses, temples, bathhouses, and brothels of the ancient city that is famous for its tragic demise. This guidebook gives you a general feel of the town’s everyday life with Via Dell Abbondanza as its main focus, one of the town’s busiest main streets.
Discovering Pompeii is a relaxing and enjoyable guidebook. It is easy to understand and is straight to the point with its clear maps and photos of the historical sites. Furthermore, it is informatively concise regarding the directions, what visitors should bring, places they should see, and when is the best time of the year for them to visit. Author Natasha Sheldon is also generous in terms of advice regarding the uneven streets of Pompeii that do not bode well for wheelchairs and prams. Also included is a warning concerning pickpockets and petty criminals. The prose is in a comfortable, personal tone, making this guidebook a little more friendly compared to other guidebooks that I have read before.
On the whole, this is a perfect guide for all travelers and history enthusiasts with its superb overview of Pompeii. The tour is skillfully organized, with descriptions of the modern site and ancient times for every stop along the way. The depth of Sheldon’s knowledge of ancient history is evident and enlightening. As a matter of fact, I am inspired by this wonderful guidebook to polish my own knowledge regarding ancient Roman history.
