Wow! I haven’t read such fast paced, well written speculative fiction in a long time. Digital Wax by Loron-Jon Stokes is a roller coaster ride of clear crisp writing. Digital Wax is cyber punk at its intense best. It is the story of Ronelle, a “virtual lifer.” He is the son of wealthy parents who have opted to have their child raised and educated in the Circuits, a virtual system that has everything the real world has only more and better. Many people spend years in the Circuits, but Ronelle is the first and only virtual lifer. Ronelle has been hard-wired to the Circuits since he was thirteen weeks old and it is the only world he knows. Digital Wax is also the story of Ronelle’s tough, spunky, girlfriend Valentine and when she proposes an outing to the real world the trouble and fun begins.
I can’t say enough good things about Digital Wax. If you like the sharp, witty dialogue that is the trademark of the Cyber Punk genre then Loron-Jon Stokes is the writer for you and Digital Wax is a novel you don’t want to miss. Gangsters doing shady deals in dark alleys, Artificial Intellects more likable and humane than human beings, with a nice little love story thrown in to boot. Digital Wax has it all and it’s all set in a very believable future. I give it five stars and I am sure most readers will enjoy it and give it high marks, too.
