Dick Weiner’s Caribbean Christmas: An Overstuffed Sequel by author Luther Banks is an out and out farce designed to make us laugh out loud. This is the second iteration of the Dick Weiner story and although I have yet to read the first, I can well imagine it is as irreverent and as farcical as this effort. Dick Weiner had traveled through time to save the world, so not surprisingly he felt he was thoroughly deserving of a vacation after that. Armed with his chillers of Coors beer, his wife, his son, and the redoubtable and unreliable Captain Jack, Dick and his entourage set sail on his multi-million-dollar, luxury, super-yacht for a peaceful and relaxing summer Christmas vacation in the beautiful Caribbean islands. Things do not quite go as planned for Dick and his companions, however. Marooned on the tiny island of Cayo Pene (Penis Island) after Captain Jack, with Dick’s wife and child, abandon him to his fate following an encounter with modern-day pirates, Dick sadly finds himself caught in the crossfire of multiple attempts to kill him. Probably the most wanted man in the world by this stage, Dick must dodge paid assassins, angry Cayo Pene residents, and a drunken, insane commander of an Ohio-class Nuclear Submarine. Christmas this year will definitely be a trial for the ever-resilient Dick Weiner.
Writing comedy is an extremely difficult task and author Luther Banks does it well in Dick Weiner’s Caribbean Christmas. Because much of this story is made up of physical comedy, it is important that the author is able to create those scenes in the reader’s mind in order to generate the smiles and laughs from the reader. Banks has that ability and the fact that I kept picturing the characters as part of a “Benny Hill” style comedy sketch is a testament to his ability to create genuinely funny situational humor. The characters are, in true farce-like nature, exceedingly overdrawn and stereotypical, even down to the many clever names of these characters. Apart from Richard Weiner, which is bound to draw a chuckle every time you read it especially from adolescent-thinking men, many of the others such as Busty Bixby, the assassin priest, Father McKill, and the submarine commander Captain Lardbottom, all draw on the well of farcical comedy and add to the enjoyment. I particularly enjoyed the non-stop action, the amazing ability of the characters to survive impossible situations, the ending, and the references littered throughout the book to current social tropes and the social climate. This book is a lot of fun and a genuinely clever look at some of the current day malaises. Most importantly, in these tough times, it will make you smile and you can’t put a price on that as I read it during the Covid-19 lockdown.
