"Destiny Made Them Brothers" is about the unlikely friendship between U.S. Grant, G.A. Custer and Johnny Yuma, two Union soldiers and a rebel. Their friendship started during the war between the States and continued. The book follows the three men through the war and then into their lives afterwards. It takes Grant to the White House, Custer to the 7th Cavalry in the West and Yuma through an odd series of adventures before returning him to Texas. Mr. Fenady managed to take historical fact and a bunch of diary entries and turn them into an easy flowing story that captured my interest and imagination.
This book will stay with me for years. It was engaging, well-written and informative. I just can't say enough about how much I enjoyed reading it. It was the kind of book that you just can't put down. The author showed great mastery in depicting battles and tender moments as well. He clearly took the time to research the material thoroughly and then presented not only the cold hard facts but also the warm malleable emotions that truly fuel any good story. The characters' names are familiar to most. However, most never even imagined the depth of those individuals' personal bonds with each other or their wives or their great and deep devotion to the young country that they all loved. I had been taught that General Grant had been nothing but a bumbling drunk that got lucky on the battlefield and that General Custer was a headstrong fool who had no other thought in his head other than the pursuit of glory. Of Johnny Yuma I knew only the words of an old song. I can't express how happy I am to have read it all in this beautiful book.
