Demystifying God: Redefining Black Spirituality in the Age of iGod by Tony Saunders is the third installment of the author's Godbody Trilogy, preceded by his books Manifesting the Divine and Black Divinity. In Demystifying God, Saunders dives deeper and reaches beyond the framework of the godbody movement and injects as much personal experience into this volume as he does theology, the science of the mind, and behavioral science. Broken down into six chapters that weave seamlessly between each other (while still being wholly autonomous in their own right), Saunders puts forward and gets to the heart of the godbody movement and its culture, and does so with the intelligence and clarity that we have come to expect from his writing.
I really enjoyed reading Demystifying God and absorbed a great deal through the words and writing of Tony Saunders. He does a fantastic job of beginning with something relatable before explaining much more complex ideas. And do not be mistaken, his work is incredibly complex, regardless of how easily he is able to explain it. For me, the most interesting chapter was The Deification of Blackness. Where Saunders excels here is in the application of science and anthropology, where ancient history and theology converge, and the foundation of civilization as we know it began, and the ancient faith began its decline. “Once the black man loses his connection to the spiritual realm, which comes via the black woman, he is easily defeated.” But Saunders—whose name is also Shahidi Islam (apt, as it means witness and martyr in both Arabic and Swahili)—sources a reconnection through the godbody movement, delivering yet another forceful manuscript that is as infectious as it is comprehensive.
