Deer Oh Deer is a children’s book on the theme of animals and nature penned by author Ed Ehlers and illustrated by Emely Pascual. Based on a true story from the author’s life, this is the second book in the Max & Tucker Adventure series which focuses on a pair of Australian Shepherd Dogs. In this adventure, Ehlers recounts the time that the brother-dogs helped to rescue a deer that had become stranded in the woods of Northern Virginia. The tale focuses on the themes of loyalty and friendship as well as a connection to nature and the appropriate ways to help and treat our animal friends.
The adorable illustrations by Emely Pascual will immediately endear readers of all ages to this delightful adventure story with a strong and pleasant moral. Max and Tucker make a cute heroic duo, and the trapped deer whom they help their owner, Daddy, to locate is even more endearing. When coupled with the simple and effective storytelling of author Ed Ehlers, the book becomes a family reading experience that everyone can enjoy and discuss long after the cover is closed. Children who already love animals will be even more inspired by the intelligence and loyalty that these lovely dogs display and the bonus material of the book is a nice touch to introduce readers to the real dogs that the story is based on. Overall, Deer Oh Deer is a cute and exciting adventure for accompanied and solo readers up to about 12 years old and is a highly recommended read.
